I have been asked questions and heard many statements over the years that relate to basic teachings in the Bible.  We are to teach the Bible not denominational-ism.

Baptism is one doctrine that is often misunderstood because its teachings vary so from denomination to denomination.  I was recently told that Baptists teach that in order to be saved one has to be baptized.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Though there may be some some fringe Baptists who believe such a thing as there are in some other denominations, the statement is false.

Here are several websites that help one understand the biblical teachings on baptism.  Site 1

Scripture clearly teaches that baptism follows salvation.

Act 10:43-48  To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.  While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.  And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.  For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?  And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. (Emphasis mine)

These individuals (Gentiles) in Acts 10 received the Holy Ghost and then were baptized in the name of the Lord.  An unsaved individual does not have the indwelling Holy Spirit.  Therefore, baptizing an unsaved individual is not in keeping with biblical teaching.

Rom 8:9  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his

There are questions that are raised about what to do with babies since they are unable to make a conscious decision to accept Christ as Savior.  It wouldn't be a safe thing to immerse a baby.  Scripture does offer a solution and that is Baby Dedication.  An infant is covered by God's grace until that time when they can make their own personal decision to accept or reject Christ as Savior, the One who sacrificed Himself as an atonement for their sin.   When that time comes is between God and the child.  When does a child know right from wrong?
